Aphasia Camp 2010

Aphasia Camp attracted 101 people from across southern Ontario, including 38 people with aphasia (communication problem after stroke), 19 family members and friends, and 44 staff, students and volunteers.  Extensive training of volunteers allowed campers to enjoy a relaxing weekend in an aphasia-friendly and accessible communication environment.

The following quotes highlight the positive impact of Aphasia Camp 2010:

·         All the love from everybody all the days that we attended.

·         Kindness.  Amazing humans together.  Fun.

·         Nice people.  Best volunteers.

·         I haven’t laughed this much since my stroke

·         I wish the best to all staff and volunteers, who help us to be so happy to be alive with whatever we have and don’t have.

·         I always leave here feeling a little more “re-energized” than I came.

·         Amazing volunteers and organizers – fabulous job.  I hope you continue the program.  It’s a reality check to come here and realize how fortunate you are and how amazing the people are that live with aphasia every day.

·         This has been an extremely valuable experience that has really taught me a lot about aphasia and how to communicate with people that have aphasia.  As someone who wishes to become a speech pathologist I really think this is an excellent chance to gain hands on experience with aphasia.

Camp was inspired by Stephen and Carol Goff, who volunteer tirelessly on behalf of people with aphasia.  Our success was due to the generous contributions and support of many community partners, organizations and individuals.  Heartfelt thanks to:
